Why It Matters
Moss Is the Symptom, Not the Disease
Mild winters, heavy shade, fir canopy and forty-six inches of rain make this one of the best moss-growing climates in the country. Roofs here grow moss that would never appear on the same shingles in a drier state.
Clearing it matters. But clearing it and stopping there leaves you with the condition that let it grow: a dried-out shingle surface that can no longer shed water quickly or hold its granules. That's why we treat removal as preparation rather than as the finished job.
What Moss Actually Does to an Asphalt Roof
It Holds Water Against the Shingle
Moss acts like a sponge sitting on your roof. Instead of water running off, it stays in contact with the shingle surface for days after the rain stops, through eight wet months a year.
The Roots Lift the Edges
Rhizoids work under the shingle edge and pry it up. A lifted edge lets wind under, lets water under, and turns a surface problem into a leak.
It Grows Where Granules Have Thinned
Moss doesn't settle on a healthy, well-granulated roof. Where you see it, the shingle underneath has usually already begun losing its oils and its granules.
Our Method
Roof-Safe. Never Pressure Washed.
A pressure washer will strip moss off a roof in minutes. It will also strip off the ceramic granules that protect the shingle from UV, which is the fastest way to take years off a roof while appearing to clean it.
We use a low-pressure, roof-safe treatment approach with manual clearing where needed, working with the shingle rather than blasting across it. Landscaping, gutters and downspouts are protected before we start and the site is cleaned before we leave.
We do not pressure wash roofs, and we won't apply rejuvenation over moss. Removal comes first so the treatment reaches the shingle instead of the growth on top of it.
On Pricing
Moss removal is quoted per roof after inspection. Pitch, access, coverage and how far the growth has worked into the shingle all change the job, so we don't publish a number we'd have to walk back on your driveway.
When removal is done as preparation on the same visit as rejuvenation, it's priced as prep rather than as a separate job. If your roof only needs the moss off, that's fine too. Richard will tell you which category yours is in.
